Welcome to the Sigma Epsilon Chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated.

Chartered in 2013 in Toronto, Canada

Since Dec 4th 1906, The brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha have striven to create meaningful change and development for all Mankind. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, inc. prides itself in being a true leader and strives to be the first at breaking down barriers and Marching toward a more perfect union. Through our aims Manly Deeds, Scholarship and Love for all man, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, inc. was the first to established a Black Greek Letter organization here in Toronto in 1908, and today we the Brothers of S.E.L have continued the legacy that those brother started many years ago.

This year we continue to strive to march towards a better future though offering Scholarship to young people, actively fund raising for multiple charities, supporting the community though mentor ship, and supporting each other through development and growth. There are many opportunities for us to become greater and greater, but it will only come with hard work. “ALPHA IS OUR BUSINESS, AND THE BUSINESS IS OUR BROTHERHOOD.”

As President of this chapter I hope to continue to develop the Alpha Phi Alpha mission to develop leaders, promote brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities.

National History

The History of Alpha Phi Alpha

Since its founding on December 4, 1906, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. has supplied voice and vision to the struggle of African Americans and people of color around the world.

Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African Americans, was founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of Brotherhood among African descendants in this country. The visionary founders, known as the "Jewels" of the Fraternity, are Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy.

The Fraternity initially served as a study and support group for minority students who faced racial prejudice, both educationally and socially, at Cornell. The Jewel founders and early leaders of the Fraternity succeeded in laying a firm foundation for Alpha Phi Alpha's principles of scholarship, manly deeds, and the uplifting of all humanity.

Alpha Phi Alpha chapters were developed at other colleges and universities, many of them historically black institutions, soon after the founding at Cornell. While continuing to stress academic excellence among its members, Alpha also recognized the need to help correct the educational, economic, political, and social injustices faced by African-Americans.

Chapter History

The History of Sigma Epsilon Lambda

For almost 10 years former Brothers of Sigma Iota and those who relocated to Toronto after College did not have a chapter with which to affiliate. This led a group of Brothers to embark on a journey to establish an Alumni chapter. After overcoming many obstacles and challenges, the journey was complete onFebruary 11th 2013 when Sigma Epsilon Lambda (SEL) was chartered as the third chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. in Canada. The chartering ceremony for the chapter was held on August 25th 2013 at University College building on the campus of the University of Toronto. The ceremony was presided by Bro. William Washington, chairman of the Committee on Membership, Standards and Extension for the Midwestern Region.

Prior to the chartering of SEL, Brothers who would go on to form the chapter reignited the District of Canada by being involved in fundraising events such as the MS Walk led by District Director Bro. Alexander K. Wood. Additionally, this group of Brothers organized the first District of Canada conference that took place on December 8th 2012. In attendance at the District conference were representatives of Midwestern Regional leadership Bro. Sharron J. Anderson (Assistant Vice President ) and Bro. Ron Clark Jr. (Executive Director) as well as Bro. Nicklaus Shoultz from Mu Delta Lambda. The first chapter meeting was held on March 25th 2013 at 100 Harrison Garden Boulevard.
